Challenges faced

Sometimes good things come in small packages. We have achieved major breakthroughs in transferring all types of goods all over the world, but none were more difficult or sensitive, like the case of the delivery of human tissue. The Alabama Tissue Centre (ATC) donated the tissue, a pulmonary homograft valve conduit worth more than RM 30,000, for a 5-year old patient in Penang. The cargo was preserved at a temperature of minus –100 degree Celcius, within a special "cryo-shipper" (with the use of liquid nitrogen) drum from Los Angeles. The special cargo required microscopic attention and fast handling, to ensure that the tissue maintained in good condition at all times.

How MASkargo faced the challenges

Upon arrival at the Advanced Cargo Centre (ACC) at KL International Airport from Los Angeles, the shipment was picked up at arrival aircraft based on pre-alert by Cargo Ramp (SCLO). It was then transferred immediately to one of ACC's numerous cold rooms as per requirement pending connection flight. Ramp SCLO then handed the shipment personally to Apron Traffic at the last minute, which is about 15 minutes before departure at aircraft side for loading. The information was updated by cargo ramp supervisor from time to time and remarked for the final station for arrival. Upon arrival in Penang, the consignee (the doctor and hospital in charge) were already waiting to collect the special cargo as they were informed well in advance of the cargo’s status at all times.
